The Annual General Meeting of the JSA on October 4, was the first to be held following the incorporation of the Society.  The committee and office bearers, constituted according to the incorporation rules, were unanimously elected:

President: John Wiltshire

Vice-President: Clive Probyn

Treasurer: Barrie Sheppard

Secretary: Barbara Niven

Committee: Bryan Reid, Bronwen Hickman.

The two other members of the pre-incorporation committee, Denis Le Neuf and Paul Tankard, have been asked to become ex-officio members.

A splendid examination of 18th Century London theatre “An Ornament of the Metropolis’? Eighteenth-Century Attitudes to the Theatre” was delivered before the AGM by Ann Blake an Honorary Associate of La Trobe University, Melbourne, enthralling a small, but highly appreciative audience.

Ann Blake has published articles on Shakespeare and other dramatists, on crime fiction and on Christina Stead. She is the author of Christina Stead’s Politics of Place (University of Western Australia Press, 1999) and co-author of England through Colonial Eyes in Twentieth-Century Fiction (Palgrave, 2001). Her latest publications are new editions of Sheridan’s The School for Scandal and Farquhar’s The Beaux’ Stratagem for the New Mermaid series.
