2019 Johnson Society Program

We are pleased to announce that dates for our 2019 program have been finalised so that these can now be put in your diary. More details will appear closer to the events.

Sunday 14 April An afternoon visit to the NGV International to view some aspect of the 18th Century Collection related to Samuel Johnson and his times.

Saturday 20 July Our Annual Full-Day Seminar which will include Tim Entwisle Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria speaking on Joseph Banks who Johnson knew and admired, and Ian Keese, giving some new insights into Hannah More, one of the famous women in Johnson’s circle. John Byrnes will also display a rarity from his vast collection of Johnsonian material. This will be held at the Kathleen Syme Centre, 251 Faraday Street Carlton.

Saturday 21 September The Twenty-fifth Fleeman Lecture, this year featuring Dr Peter Groves from Monash University, He will be contrasting Johnson as a poet with Johnson’s own work on poetry criticism. This will also be held at the Kathleen Syme Centre and be preceded by the AGM.

Saturday 7 December The Annual Christmas Party held in the afternoon at the Mitre Tavern, 5 Bank Place Melbourne.
