The Johnson Society of Australia

Celebrating the life and work of the 18th Century writer and lexicographer Samuel Johnson and his circle.

2020 Program

For twenty- six years the Johnson Society of Australia has explored life and culture in eighteenth century England through the eyes of Samuel Johnson and his circle of influential women and men by way of a program that informs, inspires and entertains.

2020 is no exception. In addition to our regular activities – a guided visit to some aspect of eighteenth culture at the NGV, a one-day Seminar, and a Johnsonian style celebration of Christmas – this year there will be an opportunity for small groups to visit the Library of John Byrnes. This library is one of the best collections in the world of rare Johnsonian material that is in private hands.

As well there will be regular Newsletters and it is hoped that Volume 18 of our Papers will be available. Our Annual Seminar will be on Saturday 18 July and will include presentations on the artist Joshua Reynolds, the music of Handel, Eighteenth Century Print Collectors and children’s books of the time. A full program of this and other events should appear on this website by early March
